In this article, we will share with you some effective and proven strategies that will help you score an A in JC A Level H2 Math.

Most people think that the road to getting an A in H2 Mathematics is simply to put in hours of practice, practice and more practice. In today’s competitive world, we cannot just rely on practising hard to score anA. We need to combine consistent practice with suitable learning and exam strategies to achieve success. In this article, we will discuss the different exam approaches and learning plans to help students excel in the A Level H2 Maths examinations.

The A level H2 Maths examinations is a high stakes exam as it constitutes 100% of a student’s final grade. Students should prepare themselves and adopt the right exam strategies to help them achieve their desired grade.

Strategy 1: Time yourself during the exam.

Work using the 1 – 1.5 rule. mark allocation is provided right after each question. It gives students an idea of the time and amount of effort required. Typically, for a 5 marks question, students should not spend more than 7.5 minutes on the question. By using this rule, students can pace themselves during the A Level H2 Maths examinations and complete the paper in time.

Strategy 2: Look out for keywords

Look out for the keywords (E.g. Deduce, solve, show, hence) in each question. These keywords are signposts to help students identify the requirements of the question.

Here are some common keywords found in H2 Mathematics exam questions

Hence – to use the answer from the previous part to solve the current question

Deduce – to derive as a conclusion from the answers found

Show – to justify the given answer. Do not substitute the given answer in the equation.

Solve – to find a solution

Find – to perform calculations and come up with an answer

Strategy 3: Attempt all parts of a question

If you come across a multi – part question in the H2 Mathematics paper, try to attempt all parts of the question. Do not give up just because you cannot answer the first part.

Strategy 4: Visualise the problem

When you are stuck on a problem, try to visualise the problem. Draw a diagram or model to break down the problem. Write down all the possible formulae you can use and see which one fits the question.

Learning Strategy 1

Before every H2 Mathematics lesson, read the material prior to class for an overview of the material. After the class, do regular revision on your H2 Mathematics topics while your memory is fresh. Complete all your homework and tutorials to build your foundation on the topic.

Learning Strategy 2

Effective preparation is the key to success in your H2 Mathematics paper. Summarise all the formulae and key concepts for each topic. Rewrite the formulae to help you with information retrieval and improvement in memory skills.

Some students use mind maps to help summarise their H2 Mathematics theory. This is also a good way to revise as students can reflect on the relationships between the formulae.

Learning Strategy 3

To deepen your learning, attempt challenging questions. Frequent exposure to complex math questions in the H2 Mathematics syllabus can improve familiarity with the content and reduces anxiety towards mathematical theory. Students build confidence and are less likely to panic when facing a challenging problem in their A Level H2 Maths examinations
