Economics is the analysis of how people, firms, cultures, and governments distribute limited resources. Due to the central problem of scarcity, we are unable to consume resources infinitely. Economics teaches us how to think critically and make informed choices on how we can better make use of resources to ensure sustainability for future generations.
The IB Super IB Economics programme in Singapore aims to to motivate students to gain a broader perspective of resource allocation through the IB Economics framework that studies how stakeholders such as governments, consumers and producers continue to meet the needs of people without overusing resources.
The IB Economics curriculum has undergone a major revamp. Students sitting for the IB exams in 2022 will be taking the new IB Economics curriculum. The curriculum is centred around 9 basic concepts: scarcity, choice, efficiency, equity, economic well-being, sustainability, change, interdependence and intervention. By designing the curriculum around these nine central concepts, students deepen their understanding of the subject by making the connections between these ideas.
Individuals can make the decision to either take IB Economics at the Higher level (HL) or Standard Level (SL).
HL students must take papers 1, 2 and 3 and finish their Internal Assessment. Meanwhile, SL students have to do their Internal Assessment and take papers 1 and 2.
Paper 1: Essay paper on all syllabus content
Paper 2: Qualitative and quantitative questions based on case studies
Paper 3: HL a policy paper with quantitative questions
Most of the changes occur in Paper 1, students now do one essay question out of a choice of 3 questions in 1 hour 15 mins. The questions can come from any part of the syllabus so it is harder for students to narrow down topics to study for their Economics essay paper.
Internal Assessment: Three analyses of news articles based on separate parts of the syllabus
They must then be able to analyse and comment on news articles. It allows them to apply these concepts to real-life contexts. To excel in this course, students have to be well-read. Keeping up with the newest global economic changes is a requirement for all IB economics students.
IB Economics in Singapore consists of 4 sections:
Unit 1: Introduction to economics
Unit 2: Microeconomics
Unit 3: Macroeconomics
Unit 4: The global economy
