Unlike the A levels students, whose grades are solely dependent on the exams they sit at the end of two years, IB students are assessed both internally and externally. They will be externally tested through a written exam at the end of their IB course as well as an investigation they have to carry out. They will be then internally tested via an experiment that is created and executed by them. This takes up 20% of the final score. By attempting the Chemistry internal assessment, students get the opportunity to apply chemistry to the real world and develop their attributes in the IB learner profile.

IA topic

Students have to choose an IA topic on an area of the syllabus which commensurates with the level of chemistry that is taken. For example, a Higher Level Chemistry student will have to carry out their investigation based on a Higher Level topic. Although teachers do not discourage students from doing an IA topic based on syllabus beyond the IB curriculum, it is not necessary for students to go beyond the IB curriculum to score a level 7 (highest grade ) for IB Chemistry.
